UNDERSTANDING THE SNAKEBITE CRISIS

A Global to Local Perspective

Snakebite envenomation is a critical but often neglected public health emergency, disproportionately affecting low-resource communities. Globally, snakebites claim the lives of an estimated 81,000 to 138,000 people each year, while 400,000 survivors suffer from permanent disabilities, disfigurement, or psychological trauma. Each year, 4.5 to 5.4 million people are bitten by snakes, and 1.8 to 2.7 million develop clinical illness.South Asia bears the highest burden, with India alone accounting for nearly 50% of global snakebite-related deaths. This grave situation stems from the wide diversity of venomous snakes, coupled with environmental and occupational exposure—particularly in rural, agrarian settings where access to timely medical care is limited.

SNAKEBITE CRISIS IN INDIA

Snakebite envenomation is a critical but often neglected public health emergency, disproportionately affecting low-resource...

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Snakebite envenomation poses a significant public health challenge in Uttar Pradesh due to its geographical diversity,...

OBJECTIVES

This initiative aimed to address the pressing need for enhanced awareness and knowledge among health-care professionals,...
CORE COMPONENTS
The initiative is structured around the following critical components to ensure a comprehensive
approach to prevention, first response, and capacity building:

State Level Training of Trainers (ToT)

Two-day state-level ToT for nominated clinicians and non-clinicians from various districts on first-aid and clinical management of snakebite; these participants will be trained as master-trainers.

District-Level ToT

One-day training of emergency ward doctors by clinical master-trainers on snakebite clinical management.

Tehsil-Level ToT

CHOs: First-aid training by non-clinical master-trainers. ASHAs: Snakebite first-aid modules by non-clinical master-trainers. Local leaders & educators: Gram Pradhans, panchayat helpers, Lekpals, primary teachers, EMTs—all trained on first-aid protocols.

Awareness Generation

  1. Nukkad Natak (street plays) in each block.
  2. IEC materials & posters in CHCs, DHs, medical colleges.
  3. Posters at ration shops.
  4. Training booklets & modules for all community stakeholders.

Digital Outreach

Dissemination of animated videos and e-comics on snakebite awareness across community platforms.

Snakebite Kits Provision

Distribute first-aid kits (gauze swabs, gloves, pressure bandages, splint, management & CPR cards) to ASHAs and 2 kits per sub-centre for rapid rural intervention.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Findings
