If Outdoor -

To avoid the exposure of lightning while outdoors, some tips to keep safe and reduce the risk are:-

  • Check the weather forecast before participating in outdoor activities. If the forecast calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity.
  • When thunder roars, go indoors – means go to a safe shelter immediately to avoid metal structures and constructions with metal sheeting. Safe shelters include pukka home, pukka building, or hard top vehicles with the windows rolled up.
If at home or Indoor
Even though shelters like your homes, offices, shopping centers, etc. considered as safe during a lightning storm, a person may still be at risk. Here are some tips to keep safe and reduce the risk are as follows:-

  • Look for darkening skies and increased wind.
  • If you hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Keep monitoring local media for updates and warning instructions by various modes of communication.
  • Stay indoors and avoid travel if possible.
Before : -
  • Ignore rumours, stay calm, don’t panic.
  • Keep your mobile phones charged for emergency communication; use SMS.
  • Listen to radio, watch TV, read newspapers for weather updates.
  • Keep cattle/animals untied to ensure their safety.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essential items for safety and survival.
  • Keep your documents and valuables in water-proof bags.
  • Be aware of flash flood areas such as canals, streams, drainage channels.
During : -
  • Don’t enter floodwaters. In case you need to, wear suitable footwear.
  • Stay away from sewerage lines, gutters, drains, culverts, etc.
  • Stay away from electric poles and fallen power lines to avoid electrocution.
  • Eat freshly cooked or dry food. Keep your food covered.
  • Drink boiled/chlorinated water.
  • Do not walk or drive in the flood waters.
  • Use disinfectants to keep your surroundings clean.
  • What to Do Before an Earthquake : -
    • Repair deep plaster cracks in ceilings and foundations. Get expert advice if there are signs of structural defects. Anchor overhead lighting fixtures to the ceiling.
    • Follow BIS codes relevant to your area for building standards
    • Fasten shelves securely to walls.
    • Place large or heavy objects on lower shelves.
    • Store breakable items such as bottled foods, glass, and china in low, closed cabinets with latches.
    • Hang heavy items such as pictures and mirrors away from beds, settees, and anywhere that people sit.
    • Brace overhead light and fan fixtures.
    • Repair defective electrical wiring and leaky gas connections. These are potential fire risks.
    • Secure water heaters, LPG cylinders etc., by strapping them to the walls or bolting to the floor.
    • Store weed killers, pesticides, and flammable products securely in closed cabinets with latches and on bottom shelves.
    • Identify safe places indoors and outdoors.

    Do : -
    • Know your building’s evacuation plan.
    • Evacuate calmly and quickly whenever a fire alarm or carbon monoxide alarm sounds.
    • Keep important items such as medications and medical equipment handy for quick access in the event of a building evacuation.
    • Know two ways out of any building.
    • Before opening a door, feel it with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, do not open it.
    • If you encounter smoke during your evacuation, stay low to the floor.
    • Know the outside rally point for your building.
    • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly.
    • Make sure that hallways and stairway doors close tightly.
    Do Not : -
  • Leave candles, incense, barbecue grills or other open flames unattended. (Note that these items are prohibited in University housing.) Use halogen lamps near curtains or other combustibles. (Halogen lamps are prohibited in University housing).
  • Hang tapestries from walls or ceilings.
  • Leave cooking appliances unattended.
  • Use barbecue grills in or on any building or fire escape.
  • Smoke in bed. (Smoking is prohibited in University housing).
  • Tamper with smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, fire alarms or sprinkler systems.
  • Ignore any building alarm.
  • Hang anything from sprinkler heads or pipes.
  • Heat wave :

    Heat Wave conditions can result in physiological strain, which could even result in death.:-

    To minimise the impact during the heat wave and to prevent serious ailment or death because of heat stroke, you can take the following measures:-

    • Avoid going out in the sun, especially between 12.00 noon and 3.00 p.m.
    • Drink sufficient water and as often as possible, even if not thirsty Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, and porous cotton clothes. Use protective goggles, umbrella/hat, shoes or chappals while going out in sun.
    • Avoid strenuous activities when the outside temperature is high. Avoid working outside between 12 noon and 3 p.m.
    • While travelling, carry water with you.
    • Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated soft drinks, which dehydrates the body.
    • Avoid high-protein food and do not eat stale food.
    • If you work outside, use a hat or an umbrella and also use a damp cloth on your head, neck, face and limbs Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles
    • If you feel faint or ill, see a doctor immediately.
    • Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. which helps to re-hydrate the body.
    • Keep animals in shade and give them plenty of water to drink.
    • Keep your home cool, use curtains, shutters or sunshade and open windows at night.
    • Use fans, damp clothing and take bath in cold water frequently.
    Bomb Threat or Attack:

    In a bomb threat scenario, you want to take your belongings with you, as in the explosion’s aftermath the assortment of scattered identifying items makes police work more difficult.:-

    • Stay away from windows because they can shatter and slash you and the force of explosion may push you out of the window. If you find yourself trapped, you want to stay away from edges; you want to distance yourself from the bomb, relocate to a central position in the building, and hide beneath something that can hold the weight of the collapsing ceiling.
